Our Roots

First Congregational United Church of Christ is a place where you will find inclusive community, vibrant worship, and a deep-rooted commitment to social justice that began with our founding in 1837 as an anti-slavery church.  We are a progressive Christian congregation that seeks to offer spiritual nourishment and a loving, supportive community to all who enter our doors. As a downtown Poughkeepsie church, we have made a continual commitment to remain in this location so that we can be a blessing to our neighbors.

What We Believe

We read and interpret the Bible with both open minds and open hearts, listening for God’s voice in the stories we find there, as well as in the witness of the Biblical prophets. We rejoice that God is still speaking to us today in each person we meet and in the ups and downs of everyday life.  We don’t claim to know exactly what God is saying, but we do try our best to listen with open hearts.

This is a safe place to ask questions, explore doubts, and nurture a relationship with the One who loves you and calls you by your name.

Children of all ages are warmly welcomed here and we offer an engaging Sunday School program for school-aged children as well as the possibilities of a teen group in the future.

We Follow Jesus

We look to the ministry, teaching, and example of Jesus Christ to show us how to live lives grounded in kindness, justice, generosity, and service.

We offer the sacrament of Communion the first Sunday of the month. With Christ as our Host, we believe the gifts of bread and juice are for everyone who wants to partake, and we offer a gluten free option for those who need it.

If you are looking for a place to experience the One who loves you and calls you by your name, if you long for a place where you can bring your whole self to the table, we hope you’ll come visit us and discover a community of people who want to welcome you with wide open arms.  Come as you are and be who you are.

No matter who you are or where you are on your journey of faith, YOU are very welcome here!
